Veterans Day Ceremony

In collaboration with the Hamburg Township VFW Post 1419 and Cub Scout Packs 143 and 592

Lakeside Cemetery, in collaboration with Hamburg Township VFW Post 1419 and Cub Scout Packs 143 and 592, invite the public to a very special Veterans Day Ceremony in Lakeside Cemetery's Field of Valor, a distinguished area designed exclusively for burial of our esteemed veterans and thier spouses.  Each sacred space is marked by an upright marble tablet memorial such as those used in Arlington National Cemetery.  The ceremony will include an invocation, salute to the Armed Forces and wreath placement; refreshments will be served.  Please enter the gates at 4810 Camp Road.

Grant "Home Run" Johnson Memorial Ceremony

Tuesday, June 24, 2014 11:00 a.m.

Lakeside Cemetery, in collaboration with benefactors of the Forest Lawn Heritage Foundation, the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project and the Friends of Buffalo Baseball History will honor the legacy of Negro League Baseball pioneer, Grant "Home Run" Johnson by placing a headstone and roadside plaque at his gravesite.

Born on September 23 1872 in Findlay, Ohio, Grant Johnson had a storied career in baseball.  He was a right handed power-hitting shortstop, who earned his nickname by hitting 60 home runs for the 1894 Findlay Sluggers.  During his accomplished baseball career, he played for, captained and managed seven top tier Negro League championship teams from 1895 to 1914.  He did the same for various Buffalo baseball clubs from 1915 to 1933.

Mr. Johnson was also a gifted baritone singer who performed with the Buffalo Clef singing group and was a founding member of the Buffalo Choral Society.

Grant Johnson died on September 4, 1963 in Buffalo, New York.  He is buried in Lakeside Cemetery - Section 3, Row 22, Grave 27.
